Understanding SKU and the Role of CPQ

SKU Simplified: SKU, or Stock Keeping Unit, is like an individual's fingerprint for products. Every product variant, be it size, color, or any other distinguishing feature, gets its unique SKU. It helps businesses keep track of their inventory, making sure that they know exactly what's in stock, what's selling, and what might need a reorder.

And how does it relate to CPQ: Configure, Price, Quote (CPQ) systems are the next step after SKUs in the sales process. In an environment where products have numerous variations, each with its SKU, creating a quote manually can be both time-consuming and prone to errors. That's where CPQ shines.

How CPQ Interacts with SKU:

  1. Configuration: Imagine you're selling a custom laptop. The customer can choose the processor, the amount of RAM, storage type, and other specifications. Each of these specifications has its SKU. The CPQ system helps guide the sales representative (or the customer in self-service scenarios) to build the laptop, ensuring only compatible components (or SKUs) are selected together.

  2. Pricing: Based on the combination of SKUs chosen during the configuration, the CPQ system calculates the final price. This might include any bulk discounts, special offers, or other pricing adjustments based on the configuration.

  3. Quoting: Once the product is configured and priced, the CPQ system generates a quote. This quote will list all the SKUs included, providing clarity to the customer about what they're purchasing. If the customer accepts, this can then be easily converted into an order.

Why This Matters:

  1. Efficiency: No need to look up individual SKUs and manually calculate prices. The CPQ does it all, saving time and reducing mistakes.

  2. Accuracy: By ensuring that only compatible SKUs are selected together and that the pricing rules are automatically applied, there's a much lower chance of errors in the sales process.

  3. Improved Customer Experience: Customers get a clear, accurate quote quickly, making the buying process smoother and building trust.

SKU gives products their unique identity, making inventory tracking precise. CPQ systems take these individual SKUs, automate the configuration, pricing, and quoting processes, ensuring that the sales process is efficient, accurate, and customer-friendly.

In a world of increasing customization and options, integrating SKUs with CPQ systems is a no-brainer for businesses aiming for growth and efficiency. And keeping the number of SKUs low and letting the CPQ-system handle the combinatory, that's smart business.
